INVENTION/ECONOMICS PROJECT STEPS 1-10 WAS DUE SATURDAY, MAY 23rd.
INVENTION/ECONOMICS PROJECT STEP 11 IS DUE THURSDAY, MAY 28TH!!
NEW SCIENCE PROJECT ALERT: DUE SATURDAY, MAY 23rd!! Our final "science lesson" for the year will incorporate STEM, creativity, math, economics, writing, entrepreneurship and most of all....SO MUCH FUN! We weren't able to do our classroom company and we weren't able to do the amazing science projects I had planned for our last grading quarter together, so we are going to do this project to replace traditional lessons. Please follow the numbered steps and links below (if you stay in order and go slow & steady, it will be the easiest!). DO NOT get overwhelmed. Just do one step at a time and go with the flow....
STEP #1: Watch the video "How To Be An Inventor! Kid President" with the adult that might be assisting you with this project. LINK TO "HOW TO BE AN INVENTOR" VIDEO
STEP #2:Watch the video "How To Invent Something in Five Easy Steps and Become an Inventor." In this video, there are vocabulary words that you might not know. Please read the vocabulary words and their definitions BEFORE watching the video. PRODUCT:In business, a PRODUCT is an object, service or idea that can be offered to sell.
TANGIBLE: If something is TANGIBLE, people can see it, touch it and understand what it looks like.
PATENT: A PATENT is a legal right given to an inventor by the government so that someone else can't copy the idea.
INVESTOR:An INVESTOR can give money to the inventor who needs money to help create and sell their idea. INVESTORS make a deal with the inventor so that if their invention sells and makes money, the INVESTOR gets his/her money back PLUS more money. LINK TO "HOW TO INVENT SOMETHING IN FIVE EASY STEPS AND BECOME AN INVENTOR."
STEP #4: Project Vocabulary Sheet. Ask your parents to print the "Shark Tank Vocabulary"sheet using the link below. Save this paper to help you understand parts of the project. If you don't have access to a printer, just come back to this link as needed to help with vocabulary. SHARK TANK VOCABULARY SHEET
Step #5: Open the "The Idea" worksheet using the link below. You may print it if you have a printer. If you don't have a printer, use a piece of paper and label it "The Idea." Then simply list your three ideas in an organized manner on the piece of paper. Then write down your final decision for your project. Save this paper in your BLUE folder. Take some time to really think about which idea will actually work and make you money. Before you pick your invention, decide which one will realistically have the best shot of selling to your target audience if it was manufactured professionally with the help of your investor. NOTE:In this project, you will only need to make a prototype of your invention so that people can understand your idea. LINK TO "THE IDEA" WORKSHEET
Step #6: Enjoy listening to one of my favorite picture books "What Do You Do With An Idea" by Kobi Yamada. What is the theme of this story? Why did I want you to read this book before you start your invention? LINK TO READ ALOUD OF "WHAT DO YOU DO WITH AN IDEA?"
Step #7: Open the "The Materials" worksheet using the link below. You may print it if you have a printer. If you don't have a printer, use a piece of paper and label it "The Materials." List the materials you would like to use for your invention. Make sure to read all the tips I give you on the worksheet. Save this paper in your blue folder. LINK TO "THE MATERIALS"WORKSHEET
Step #8: Open "The First Model" worksheet using the link below. You may print it if you have a printer. If you don't have a printer, use a piece of paper and label it "The First Model." Draw the model of your invention as described on the worksheet. Be very specific, neat and detailed. Make sure you are saving these papers in your blue folder! LINK TO "THE FIRST MODEL" WORKSHEET Step #9: Time to build! Follow the guidelines in the link "TIME TO BUILD." LINK TO "TIME TO BUILD" INFORMATION
Step #10: You really need to watch the video "How to Sell Your Invention" with as much focus as possible. Watching it with an adult would be ideal. The point you must take from this video is that you're selling the BENEFIT OF YOUR PRODUCT you invented. It's your IDEA that matters. You don't need a fancy prototype. You can apply for a simple $70.00 patent. If you can convince people that your product will BENEFIT THEM in some way, that's the ticket to success! LINK TO "HOW TO SELL YOUR INVENTION" VIDEO
Step#11: NOT DUE UNTIL THURSDAY, MAY 28th. Use the link below for the final piece of the project. LINK TO "SELLING YOUR PRODUCT" ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
PAST DUE SCIENCE LESSONS: NO NEW SCIENCE LESSONS FOR MAY 3rd-MAY 8th. *Make sure you have finished all past due science lessons and the IXL lessons. Look at the "IXL LESSONS" tab for what's due by May 22nd. They are also listed below. T.1, T.2, T.3, T.4, T.5 (Due 5/22/20) H.1 (Due 5/22/20) I.1, I.2, I.3 (Due 5/22/20)
Science Due Sunday, May 3rd: 1. Read the "Current Electricity" mini book in the link below. If you have a printer, print out the make the mini book. Link to Current Electricity Mini Book
2. Using the mini book as a reference, take the assessment on Google Forms using the link below. Link to Google Form Assessment
Genius Hour: Friday, May 1st: On Friday, May 1st, students will be completing a STEM project at home. The engineering project is to construct a free standing bucket tower using any materials they wish to use. The tower must stand on its own and the bucket must HANG from the tower. Then, use pennies to test how much weight the bucket tower can hold. Send me a picture via Remind of you and your project on Friday. Tell me how many pennies your bucket tower could hold. If you don't have pennies, think of another item you may have a lot of in your house that will add weight to your bucket. Message me with any questions. HAVE FUN!!!
